Commodity transit shed, West India Dock. This transit shed, one of many in the West India Docks, is temporarily stocked with imported products. Goods from Bordeaux, France are in the foreground, imprinted with the request to 'use no hooks' when transporting. Imports handled by this dock included, sugar, tea, coffee, jute, oil, spirits, shells, horns and spices. Once assembled and sorted, some goods were distributed to horse-drawn carts or vans to be taken to merchants and markets. Others were placed into railway wagons for distribution across the country. Porters and dockers wheeling sack barrows in from the quayside halted briefly for John H Avery to take this photo.
