Inspired by the artist's finds on the Thames foreshore, this captivating replica Roman oil lamp brings ancient craftsmanship into the modern day.
Mark Sowden, a London-based ceramic artist, carefully recreated the texture, form, and spirit of the original lamps, which would have lit the rooms nearly 2,000 years ago.
Sowden’s expert use of a two-part plaster mould and hand-casting technique connects him directly to the artisans of the past. Though it could potentially be used for oil and wick lighting, we recommend this piece be appreciated as a decorative ornament to preserve its historical charm.
