Storage at the Tilbury Docks: 1919

£25.00
Interior view of a storage room at the Tilbury docks. Salmon shipped in from Cordova, Alaska, and Monte Vista apricots from North America were temporarily stored in this transit shed in Tilbury Docks. The fruit trade was increasing at this time, and cargoes were dispatched at the Royal Victoria, Albert, King George V and Tilbury Docks. Cases were lifted from the cold storage holds on board ships and deposited into the large airy transit sheds at each dock. Here they could be sorted and distributed to markets, including Covent Garden, Spitalfields and Borough, or loaded into railway wagons to be sent countrywide.
