London the Illustrated History Paperback
FREE postage on UK orders over £30
A beautifully illustrated history of London, written by curators from the Museum of London.
It is arranged chronologically, but has lots of thematic strands running through it, such as immigration, entertainment, fashion, transport and trade. Like the museum, it looks at what people's lives were like in each period, and at all social levels, from aristocratic housing to prostitution, poverty and crime.
There are lots of specially produced maps to illustrate these themes, and there are reconstructions of major buildings, such as the Rose Theatre, Bank of England and the Crystal Palace. Most of the illustrations are of objects, prints and paintings from the museum's collections.
