Bartmann Faces A3 print

FREE postage on UK orders over £30
London-based artist Ed Bucknall has spent years exploring the Thames foreshore as a mudlark, uncovering fragments of history hidden in the river’s depths. His work brings these discoveries to life through intricate drawings and paintings, transforming lost artefacts into striking artworks.
This A3 print captures 79 ‘face fragments’ found by the artist – remnants of Bartmann or Bellarmine jugs, distinctive 16th and 17th century stoneware imported to London from Germany’s Rhineland region. These jugs, once used for storing ale and spirits, bore bearded faces as both decoration and symbolism.
Each fragment in this print tells a story of London’s past, shaped by time, trade, and the tides. A perfect piece for history lovers and archaeology enthusiasts.
