Beads have a fascinating history; tiny, beautifully coloured, and tactile, yet intricately linked to the historical trade between Europe and Africa, including the inhuman trading of humans.
Today, these same beautifully coloured beads are highly valued and sought after by the descendants of the original traders. In Jo Boateng's work, the tradition of bead trading continues, using beads made in Japan and woven in London by an African-born artist.
Eno and Teaa's woven beaded jewellery features a striking black, white, and red colour scheme, symbolising the full life cycle. The colours are stripped back in contrast to vintage trade beads and their modern counterparts, which are heavily patterned and use a multi-colour palette. The collection showcases beading as a versatile discipline.
