Oil painting on canvas in a gilded wooden frame. The artist, Robert Allen, was the proprietor of this tobacconist''s shop at 20 Hart Street, Grosvenor Square. As advertised outside, Allen was also a writer and a sign painter. While the traditional trade signs of the tobacconist surmount the fascia, various posters can be seen outside the shop: a steamer service by the ''William George'' and ''Royal Adelaide'' is advertised as operating between London Bridge and Margate, Deal and Dover.
