Behind the Bar'. Watercolour depicting an interior of archetypal public house in late Victorian London. The bar is believed to be in Old Street or Caledonian Road. In the foreground are variety of bar fittings. The middle ground shows customers whose circumstances often imply addition to gin. In the background there is a pawnbroker's sign. This watercolour is a finished study for an oil of the same name.
