George Davison Reid photographed Covent Garden market porters and van drivers outside the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Arranging the produce for market was demanding work and, by the early morning, many of these porters would already have been working for hours. The long established market place was under pressure to move. The congested facilities were described at the time as 'altogether inadequate to the necessities of the trade'. However, the fruit and vegetable market did not relocate until 1973. The auditorium of the Theatre Royal was remodelled in 1922, and throughout the 1920s and 30s presented a string of highly successful musical shows.
