The Thames Tunnel. Interior view looking along the Thames Tunnel, with pedestrians. For a charge of one shilling, members of the public could descend into the 'subterranean gloom', and on busy days the tunnel received up to 700 visitors. Not all tourists were impressed. The composer Tchaikovsky noted that he 'nearly fainted for lack of air' while visiting the tunnel. The text at the bottom of the image describes its dimensions and that it was designed and commissioned by M. Brunel, to whom this plate is most respectfully inscribed by The Publishers. Coloured aquatint.
