The Four Times of the Day, Noon'. Engraving. Exterior scene probably Hog Lane, London, which is now part of Charing Cross Road. The scene combines a group of people coming out of the French Chapel, Soho on the right with a group of people eating and drinking in the tavern on the left. It shows the Huguenot congregation emerging from the French Church in Soho. The Huguenot refugees who arrived in the 1680s used it as their first place of worship. Hogarth contrasts the repectable behaviour and appearance of the French community with the disorderliness of the natives on the other side of the street. Among the working class crowd on the left is a Black man kissing a woman holding a pie, marking the presence of Black Londoners at this date.
