The City from Bankside. The City riverfront is dominated by St. Paul's Cathedral looming in the background. The sequence of wharves (from left to right) is: Trig Stairs, St. Paul's Wharf, Carron Wharf and Copper Wharf. In the foreground, on the wharf at Bankside, blocks of stone are being prepared for perhaps a bridge or a warehouse under construction in the metropolis. Across the river, the sunlight falls on some newly built warehouses (right of centre), and the words 'Baynards Castle' and 'Copper Company' can just be discerned. This area was the centre of the copper trade in London. Many merchants and companies, such as the English Copper Company and the Carron Company, had their offices and warehouses there.
