Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) stands in formal dress facing the viewer, left hand on hip, right hand at his side holding white kid gloves, his left leg forward and turned out. This caricature of Wilde shows him at the height of his glamour and fame. 'Vanity Fair' published it in their 'Men of the Day' series. Wilde is dressed flamboyantly, with his signature carnation buttonhole. The Dublin-born Wilde is one of the world's most celebrated gay icons. A writer and socialite, in 1895 he was convicted of committing homosexual acts and sentenced to two years hard labour in prison. Although Wilde's health health suffered from his imprisonment, his social disgrace was even harder for him to bear.
