A donkey for hire on Clapham Common, c.1877. The man leaning over the donkey is the son of the owner, Mr. Laurence. Donkey rides were popular with children and could be hired all day if required. From a series of 37 photographs published in the book, 'Street Life in London' (1877), with text written by Thomson and the journalist Adolphe Smith.
